AGE IS NOT A LIMIT IN SERVING GOD

For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet young, he began to seek after the God of David his father: and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem from the high places, and the groves, and the carved images, and the molten images. 2 Chron. 34:3

What did you have on your mind at the age of eight? Perhaps it was a long time ago for you to consider but think back if you can. What were your favorite subjects in school? What were your favorite activities? What did you want to be when you grew up? A larger number of grownups may not have any recollection of that time, yet anything is possible for a child of that age.

In today’s bible reading, Josiah did not really have an opportunity to dream about what he wanted to be when he grew up. His career life began quite early in his childhood. When Josiah was eight years old, he became the king of Judah. Imagine the immense responsibility he had at such a youthful age. The national decisions he had to make, the people he ruled, the diplomatic discussion he had to settle, nevertheless, his age was not a negative factor for the job. In fact, it may have been an asset. When you read this story, it will make you rethink the potential that is packed in children who love God.

Josiah became king when he was eight years old. In Josiah’s day, boys were considered men at age twelve. By sixteen, Josiah understood the responsibility of his office. He sought the Lord and realized his role of turning the hearts of people to the Lord. He noticed that leaders make unpopular decisions for the good of the people. He began to purify Judah and Jerusalem, destroying all the pagan shrines, the Asherah poles, and the carved idols and cast images, (2 Chronicles 34:3). In comparison, at this young age, Josiah showed greater wisdom than many of the older kings who had come before him, because he decided to seek the Lord God and his wisdom.

Some people use age as an excuse for not serving the Lord: “I’m too young,” or “I’m too old,” or “I’ve only been a Christian for a short time-I don’t know enough.” It is clear from this passage that God can use people of any age to make a difference for him. They just need to be willing and open.

Don’t let your age make you feel disqualified from serving God. Learn from Josiah’s example—that God can use you at any age if you will listen to Him and obey His Word. Why not start today by seeking to live by His will in your life.

Dear Heavenly Father, I thank you for your word. I pray that you may use me to glorify your name on earth. I pray you reveal your will to me that I may live in it. I ask you for wisdom and understanding of your word, in Jesus' name I pray, amen.
